This is my survey from the second semester in my sophomore year.  It contains the three best pieces for each class as well as some personal work I made in my last semester at PrattMWP.

I was awarded the Communications Design Honors Award for this and the rest of my body of work this year.  I’m working on some freelance jobs this summer and continuing my studies in Brooklyn next year at Pratt’s main campus.

Experimenting with 3d type and photography.

Midterm project for my Visual Imaging Class.

We were supposed to find the letter forms of the alphabet in the outside world, meaning not in text or type but shapes that create them.

So I decided to go to one of my favorite place in the world, the field.  Some close ups after the break.

Competition Brief

Create the poster for 2010, International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures; a competition to promote better communication and understanding between all peoples and cultures.

OVERVIEW

The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2010, International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, and has defined three main dimensions: dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation.

So the design we came up with was this:

“The “Culture Magnet’ is a metaphor showing how culture brings all of us together. The figures are collecting from all over the poster, symbolizing people coming together from around the world. The figures are of different shapes, sizes and color, just like the people of this world. The textures help to heighten the differences between each figure, relating to the uniqueness of the numerous cultures that exist.”

For my viscom class we were given two options:

1. To make two TrueStory posters, the idea from last year. Seen Here.
2. To come up with a brand new marketing campaign.

I decided that I liked the ideas that were represented in the first one, but still wanted to try something else.

I wanted it to be both fun, interactive while still getting the message across of coming to our school. So I came up with the pull-tab idea. It allows the first poster to be uncluttered of type to add a more intimate and personal feel. To get the entirety of it, you then have to pull the tab down, which adds even more of a connection.

I’m still working on doing two more of these. One of my friend Rachel, and another of two friends with two separate pull tabs in the same poster.

For our first project for screenprint & stenciling class we had to create stencils and make nine different monotypes. I ended up creating about 15 stencils all together. We also had to have around five or six inks of varying transparency and color.  All of them were on paper that was either 15″ x 22″ or 11″ x 15″

The pictures are not the highest of quality cause I snapped them quickly but still wanted to put them up.

Wherever the Wind Goes

It was late winter when we realized we couldn’t stay here very much longer. I guess it’s not like we hadn’t foreseen this outcome. We thought it would have taken much longer than that. The climate around there wasn’t what we were used to. Our last home had been much more forgiving than this. But I guess that’s just our luck.

We did the best with what we could. The hollows of The Willow, while perfect at the start, began to fill with whatever Mother Nature decided to throw our way. Ledges and shelves we built were smashed and ruined by meteors of acorns and stones. Her collection of debris coated the floor of our home.

…Our home?

I guess I wouldn’t even call The Willow that any longer. Our hearts were no longer in those ruins. Whatever hadn’t been wrecked by then was destroyed when the river flowed too greatly. The Willow was once strong, but once the winter carved its way in, it left behind cracks beyond repair. When the filth came to our waists we knew it was nearing the end.

The last weeks of winter treated us dreadfully. It was as though they cared not if we survived. Our plans for refuge, were the ones that delivered us here.  The plans that we had used time and time again. Tried and true, this tradition. The only thing we had left to count on.

When spring came, the greens of our saviors gave us hope. Those leaves that we would take in promise of deliverance to something better. We seized them with what strength we had and left behind the remnants of The Willow.

Right now I’m unsure of the place we’ll end up. The breeze is fickle and our journey is long.  Wherever our destination I hope it is kind and yielding.

Vignette Assignment:

Like a Couple of Fish

We peered out through the straw at the rest of the children. Looking through windows, under barrels, and into trees. This is all we had to occupy ourselves on nice days. Susan gave me a stern look as if saying “Why did you choose here?” It was unbearably itchy, in her defense, but the haystack was the best hiding place in the whole orphanage. A few rustling footsteps and we were joined by another. We moved over to accommodate Anthony and whoever would come after him.

The Skies Above

Through the cul-de-sac,
a sigh of trespassing means nothing to us,
at this dead end.
Armed with only flashlights,
and our love,
we breach these trees.
Into our kingdom,
where wildflowers,  tall grass and trees bow,
to no one.
Allows us to see the stars.
